Hoheria sexstylosa is an evergreen, erect, much-branched tree, which grows 12–25 ft (4–8 m) or more. The leaves vary in shape, 1–3 in (2.5–7.5 cm) in young plants, 2–7.5 in (5–19 cm) in mature plants. The flowers are up 0.75 in (1.9 cm) across; summer. It is fairly hardy in the UK.

Hoheria sexstylosa is found in lowland and lower mountain forests in the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Starburst is a good-flowering, compact and upright form.
