Melicytus crassifolius (Hymenanthera crassifolia)
is a much-branched, evergreen shrub growing up to 40–80 in
(1–2 m) high. The dark green, leathery, spear-shaped leaves
are 0.25–0.5 in (0.8–1.2 cm) long. Small yellow
flowers in spring followed by white berries in autumn. It is hardy in
the UK. |

Metrosideros carminea is a sturdy climber that can
grow up to 40 ft (12 m) high. The dark green, leathery, oval
leaves are 0.8–1.6 in (2–4 cm) long. The flowers
are carmine; spring. |

Metrosideros excelsa forms a wide-spreading tree 30–70 ft
(9–21 m) high. The mature leaves are round, leathery, dark
green and 1–4 in (2.5–10 cm) long. The flowers
are a spectacular spray of red stamens, several inches across. |

tree with creamy-yellow edged leaves. The flowers are red. Not commonly
grown, even in New Zealand. Probably best grown in a conservatory in

Metrosideros kermadecensis ‘Variegata’
forms a wide-spreading tree 20–60 ft (6–18 m)
high. The leaves are smaller and more rounded than those of Metrosideros
excelsa. The flowers are a spectacular spray of red stamens, but not
as large as those of Metrosideros excelsa. |

Metrosideros ‘Maungapiko’ is an evergreen
tree that can grow up to 33 ft (10 m) high. The green, leathery
leaves are spear-shaped. Crimson red flowers; summer. Tender in the

Myosotidium hortensia is a large and impressive herbaceous
plant from the Chatham Islands, reaching 24 in (60 cm) or
more high. The flowers are pale to dark blue, up to 0.7 in (1.7 cm)

high. The small, green, leathery leaves are 0.3–0.5 in (7–12 mm)
long, sometimes with a tiny notch at the tip. The tiny flowers, with
pale yellow or red petals, occur in clusters. |
